Partnership aims to develop cybersecurity solutions to promote transit rider safety

(Windsor, Ontario, May 26, 2021) – The University of Windsor’s SHIELD Automotive Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Canadian Urban Transit Research and Innovation Consortium (CUTRIC) to collaborate on innovative technology and knowledge mobilization designed to help public transit operators keep riders safe.

According to SHIELD co-founders Mitra Mirhassani, a UWindsor electrical and computer engineering professor, and Ikjot Saini from the School of Computer Science, the partnership will work to develop cybersecurity research, training, and awareness.

“If there’s one thing we have learned over the past year, it’s the importance of collaboration. Be it to advance our knowledge, tackle the problems we face, or overcome challenges which come our way – collaboration within and across sectors is the key to achieving our goals,” says Josipa Petrunic, President & CEO of CUTRIC. “CUTRIC is proud to be partnering with the University of Windsor as we set out on this new journey of strengthening, and advancing, both our scientific, educational, and technological capabilities.”

About CUTRIC

CUTRIC is a non-profit organization that spearheads, designs, and launches technology and commercialization projects that advance next-generation zero-carbon mobility and transportation solutions across Canada. It also develops low-cost simulation tools to help transit agencies across Canada and the United States predict how their electric buses, hydrogen fuel cell buses and autonomous smart vehicles will operate in real-time on roads and in service.

CUTRIC also aims to generate solutions that decrease fuel consumption, reduce emissions, reduce congestion, and improve quality of life for mobility customers and transit riders, and supports the development and commercialization technologies required for a 21st century low-carbon green economy.
