DR. JOSIPA PETRUNIC, PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF THE CANADIAN URBAN TRANSIT RESEARCH & INNOVATION CONSORTIUM (CUTRIC), RELEASED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT ON THE ONTARIO GOVERNMENT’S SPEECH FROM THE THRONE
As a consortium dedicated to advancing mobility and transportation solutions required for a low-carbon economy, CUTRIC welcomes the Ontario government’s Speech from the Throne and urges the provincial government to follow through the vision of post-pandemic recovery with specific plans for economic action that prioritizes investment in public transit. The Ontario government must continue to support the health of Ontarians while making bold and ambitious plans for the province’s economic rebuild.
CUTRIC is pleased to see Speech from the Throne acknowledge the role that public transit can play in creating an economic recovery fuelled by growth. We welcome the provincial government’s commitment to build and expand transit to communities across the province.
Investing in transit, particularly innovative forms of zero-emissions transit, will support economic recovery by creating jobs while reducing emissions and positioning Ontario as a national leader in clean technology. Clean transit can form the heart of a made-in-Ontario environmental plan that drives down emissions while keeping Ontario “open for business”.
We urge the provincial government to follow through with a promised economy recovery plan that focuses on clean and innovative transit as part of the province’s plan to invest in more transit. Now is the time for bold leadership, and the province must look to ambitious economic recovery plans while preserving the health of Ontarians. Our members across transit agencies, advanced manufacturers, utilities, government agencies, academics and not-for-profits, look forward to working with the government to bring long-term economic benefit to the region with clean transit.
