Dr. Josipa Petrunic, President and Chief Executive Office of the Canadian Urban Transit Research & Innovation Consortium (CUTRIC) released the following statement related to the Government of Canada’s climate change announcement

CUTRIC, the non-profit responsible for the development and commercialization of low-carbon transit technologies, applauds the federal government’s A Healthy Environment and a Healthy Economy plan, which recognizes the importance of investing in low-carbon innovation to seize the economic opportunities available while rebuilding a cleaner and more resilient economy. Key to its success will be transit innovation, like advanced hydrogen technologies, which will further establish Canada as a world leader and secure investment and jobs as we transform our economy to serve all Canadians as we come back stronger from the COVID-19 pandemic.

CUTRIC applauds Prime Minister Trudeau, and Minister Guilbeault, Minister McKenna, and Minister Wilkinson, for putting forward investments to achieve Canada’s net-zero commitments, with a commitment to establish permanent public transit funding this January 2021. This follows intense advocacy from CUTRIC in advance of the Speech from The Throne, including a tangible, clear Five-Point Plan to Build Back Better Public Transit and an open letter calling on the federal government to accelerate its campaign commitments and commit an additional $3 billion more per year as part of a stable, predictable funding stream for public transit infrastructure.

CUTRIC, and its transit agency, industry, utility, consultancy, government agency, academic, and not-for-profit members, understand that only through true partnership and deliberate, strategic investments will these projects be accomplished. Together, we can support Canadians while creating jobs and economic prosperity, connecting communities and improving the environment through reducing emissions.

CUTRIC is a non-profit innovation consortium with a vision to make Canada a global leader in low-carbon smart mobility. Through industry-led collaborative research and large-scale technology integration trials, CUTRIC is working to achieve this goal by focusing on technology development, integration and standardization of low-carbon propulsion systems and smart vehicle systems, data-driven analytics in mobility, and cybersecurity in transportation.
